Sharing Experience with Diesel Generator Sets | Operating Vibration, Abnormal Noise, Freewheeling? Beginner-Level Troubleshooting Guide (Tutorial for Newcomers)
Diesel generator sets often experience issues such as fluctuating idling speeds, severe engine shaking, and accompanying piercing abnormal noises, causing unstable load performance and delaying construction progress. These faults do not require complex equipment and are mostly caused by three types of problems: air intake in the fuel system, carbon buildup in the injectors, and aging of the shock-absorbing base. Below are simple on-site troubleshooting steps that can be done immediately, allowing even beginners to quickly carry out repairs.
Ⅰ. Fluctuating Engine Speed (RPM Fluctuation) - Check Fuel System First
Idle speed fluctuating back and forth is commonly called engine surging, and the primary cause is air entering the fuel system.
1. Check the diesel filter and fuel line connections for oil leaks; if the sealing ring is loose, replace it directly.
2. Manually press the fuel pump to remove air until no bubbles appear at the outlet, then tighten.
3. A long-unreplaced clogged filter will restrict fuel supply, causing surging; replace the filter and test.
Next, check the injectors. Diesel impurities can cause poor atomization, uneven cylinder performance, and fluctuating RPM. If conditions are limited, remove and clean carbon deposits; if worn severely, replace the injectors directly.
Ⅱ. Severe Whole-Machine Vibration - Focus on Damping and Fixing
If the engine vibrates severely on startup and the ground shakes, check in two areas:
1. Engine mount rubber pads: prolonged use can cause the rubber to crack, harden, and fail, eliminating damping function. Resonance and abnormal noise occur; replace the whole set of damping pads.
2. Uneven ground at the construction site: loose bolts can cause severe vibration during operation; level the base and tighten all fasteners.
Ⅲ. Abnormal Noise with Vibration - Quickly Identify Fault Points
Metallic clicking with vibration: injector atomization is poor or valve clearance is too large; adjust valve clearance and clean the injectors.
Dull humming resonance: damping pads damaged or base suspended.
Intermittent thudding and vibration: fuel supply is obstructed, or diesel grade is incorrect.

Summary:
Regular maintenance can greatly reduce vibration and surging faults: regularly replace diesel filters, check damping pads quarterly, and use qualified diesel to avoid carbon deposits. If the fault persists after following the above steps, it is likely internal components such as the governor or crankshaft are damaged; it is recommended to contact professional maintenance personnel.
