After a diesel generator set has been idle for a period of time, sometimes it fails to generate electricity when needed. Some users may have encountered this situation. Below, we summarized the following based on years of on-site practical experience:

 

Ⅰ. Most common reason (loss of excitation in the excitation system, accounting for over 80%)

 

When a generator has been idle for a long time, the residual magnetism in the rotor disappears, preventing the initial voltage from being established.

 

Symptoms: the generator runs normally, speed is up to standard, but there is no output voltage.

 

1. Cause: Long downtime, humid environment, winding demagnetization. Self-excited generators rely on residual magnetism to start voltage.


2. Solution: Connect an external battery for excitation (DC 12V/24V), positive to the excitation positive, negative to negative, touch for a few seconds briefly.

Ⅱ. Circuit/Switch failure

 

1. Output circuit breaker/main switch is off, tripped, or damaged, cannot reset.


2. Loose, oxidized, or broken terminals; idle dampness can cause poor contacts.


3. Leakage protector tripped; reset and retry.

 

Ⅲ. Voltage regulator (AVR) failure

 

AVR is the core of voltage stabilization; it may be affected by humidity, aging, or component burnout.

 

- Symptoms: Speed is normal, but voltage is 0 or extremely low and unstable.


- Troubleshooting: Check for burn marks, bulges, water ingress; measure AVR input and output.

Ⅳ. Moisture in winding/insulation deterioration

Long-term idling in a humid environment can cause moisture in stator/rotor windings, insulation breakdown, or inter-turn short circuits:

- Symptoms: No output during operation, or trips after power delivery, generator body overheating.
- Solution: Ventilate and dry; severe cases require winding inspection and repair.

 

Ⅴ. Mechanical and speed issues

1. Diesel engine speed insufficient (idling, throttle stuck, governor fault). The generator must reach rated speed to generate electricity.


2. Coupling slippage, transmission failure-engine runs, but generator rotor does not rotate normally.

 

Ⅵ. Carbon brush/Slip ring failure (for brushed generators)

1. Carbon brushes worn out, stuck, or spring failed, failing to contact slip rings.


2. Slip rings dirty, oxidized, or oily, causing poor conductivity.


Solution: Clean slip rings, replace or polish carbon brushes.

Ⅶ. Other less common issues

 

1. Rectifier diode damaged (excitation circuit bridge).


2. Temperature control or protection module malfunctioning, locking output.


3. Phase/transformer fault (for high-power units).

Simple troubleshooting order (from easy to difficult):

 

1. Check if diesel engine speed reaches rated value.


2. Check all output switches, circuit breakers, and protection switches for proper reset.


3. Check carbon brushes and terminals for looseness or dirt.


4. Prioritize excitation (most effective).


5. If the above fail, check the AVR, rectifier bridge, and winding moisture conditions.
