Essence of engine seizure: dry friction and overheating between the piston, piston rings, and cylinder liner, often caused by insufficient lubrication, cooling failure, improper assembly/oil/operation, managed in four parts: usage, maintenance, assembly, and fault warning.

Ⅰ. Standards for the Break-in Period After New Engine / Major Overhaul (The Stage Most Prone to Cylinder Scoring)吗

1. Strictly prohibit long periods of operation under no load or full load
- First 50 hours: Control load within 50%, operate intermittently, shut down every 2 hours for a 15-minute cooldown
- Prohibit starting with a cold engine under heavy load or sudden full throttle

2. During the break-in period, use original manufacturer break-in oil; do not use ordinary oil

3. Regularly check engine oil level and oil pressure; shut down immediately if below the standard

4. At the end of the break-in period, change the engine oil and filter, and clean metal debris from the oil pan

Ⅱ. Lubrication System Management (The Primary Cause of Cylinder Scoring: Oil Shortage, Oil Interruption, Oil Deterioration)

1. Engine Oil Requirements
- Match grade: Choose according to ambient temperature; use 10W-30 for low temperature, 15W-40 CF/CJ diesel oil for high temperature/heavy load
- Absolutely do not mix different brands or grades of oil; do not mix with low-quality recycled oil

2. Daily Checks
- Always check the dipstick before starting; oil level must be between the upper and lower marks. Do not start if below the lower limit
- Monitor dashboard oil pressure: idle ≥ 0.2 MPa, rated speed 0.3–0.5 MPa; stop immediately if pressure drops sharply

3. Filters and Oil Path
- Replace engine oil filter on schedule (every 200–250 hours); blockage will cause insufficient oil supply
- Regularly clean the oil suction strainer; blockage will prevent oil suction and cause dry operation
- Inspect and repair clogged oil pipes/channels or worn/pressure-leaking oil pump promptly

III. Cooling System Management (High temperature is the core driver of engine seizure)

1. Coolant standards
- Use long-life antifreeze; direct tap water addition is prohibited (scale clogs water passages, corrodes cylinder liners)
- Maintain coolant level at the radiator mark; low water can quickly cause engine seizure due to extreme high temperatures

2. Regular maintenance of heat dissipation components
- Clean dust and debris from the radiator and intercooler to prevent poor heat dissipation and sudden cylinder temperature spikes
- Check fan belt tension and water pump operation; water pump leaks or slipping impeller can quickly cause high temperatures
- Thermostat stuck closed prevents proper circulation; regularly inspect and replace as needed

3. High temperature handling
- If water temperature exceeds 95°C, immediately reduce load and stop operation; sudden addition of cold water during high temperature is prohibited (cylinder liner may crack or warp, causing engine seizure)

IV. Fuel and Intake System (Abnormal combustion causing local overheating)

1. Fuel cleanliness
- Replace diesel filters on schedule and regularly drain accumulated water
- Poor quality diesel burns incompletely; carbon buildup can stick piston rings, reduce heat dissipation, and lead to engine seizure

2. Smooth air intake
- Clogged air filter causes insufficient intake, worsens combustion, and increases exhaust temperature; sand and dust wear the cylinder wall
- Damaged air filters allow dust into the cylinder, causing abrasive wear and rapid cylinder wall damage

3. Fuel injection system maintenance
- Leaking or poorly atomized fuel injectors: local carbon buildup causes overheating, and local piston high temperatures can melt and seize the engine
- Incorrect fuel injection timing increases detonation high temperature, accelerating cylinder liner wear

Ⅴ. Proper Operating Habits (Major cylinder scuffing failures caused by human operation)

1. Cold Engine Operation
- During winter low-temperature starts, idle and preheat for 3–5 minutes to allow full oil lubrication before loading.
- Low-temperature oil is viscous, causing instant insufficient fuel supply; directly applying load can easily result in scuffing.

2. Shutdown Standards
- After full-load operation, first unload the load and idle for 3–5 minutes before shutting down to prevent residual heat in the cylinder from not dissipating and causing local overheating.
- Emergency shutdown at high temperature is prohibited; after the oil pump stops, pistons with high temperature have no lubrication.

3. Load Control
- Long-term operation above rated power or frequent sudden load changes are prohibited.
- Long-term overload can cause cylinder temperature and oil temperature to continuously exceed limits, resulting in the failure of the lubrication film.

Ⅵ. Assembly and Component Quality (Errors in major overhaul or component replacement can directly cause scuffing)

1. Component Matching
- Cylinder liners, pistons, and piston rings should use original factory matching parts; non-standard parts may have unacceptable fit clearance.

2. Strict Control of Fit Clearance
- If piston-to-cylinder wall clearance is too small: it may seize and scuff after thermal expansion; if too large: poor lubrication.
- Piston ring end gap and side clearance should be assembled according to the standards in the maintenance manual.

3. Assembly Cleanliness
- Thoroughly clean the cylinder, piston, and oil passages before assembly; ensure there are no metal filings or sand particles.
- Apply sufficient lubricating oil on pistons and cylinder walls during assembly.

4. Cylinder Gasket and Cylinder Head Fastening
- Tighten the cylinder head bolts in diagonal sequence according to standard torque in multiple steps to prevent cylinder liner deformation and abnormal local contact.

The diesel generator set's speed is normal, but what is the reason for the unstable voltage? After many years of experience, reading this makes everything suddenly clear.

Ⅶ. Daily Inspection and Early Warning (Detect signs early to avoid cylinder scuffing and scrapping)

Immediately stop the machine for inspection if any of the following occur:
1. Low/fluctuating oil pressure, sudden oil consumption increase.

2. Continuously high water temperature, frequent water shortage in the radiator, or oil turning white (coolant leakage into oil).

3. Blue smoke from exhaust, power loss, difficulty starting.

4. Unusual noise inside the unit, excessive crankcase gas.

Three core rules to prevent cylinder scuffing:
1. Oil is sufficient, not degraded, and pressure is normal (ensure proper lubrication).
2. Water is sufficient, cooling is good, and no overheating (control cylinder temperature).
3. Preheat cold engine, stop hot engine gradually, avoid long-term overload (standard operation).
