Operation Specifications for the Break-in Period of a Brand New Diesel Generator Set (0–50 Hours Before First Maintenance)

 

In the previous article, we discussed the first maintenance time for newly purchased diesel generator sets. Now, we will discuss the complete operating standards for the break-in period of brand-new diesel generator sets. This article is for reference and exchange only. Please strictly follow the manufacturer's requirements for specific implementation.

 

Ⅰ. Load Control (Most Critical)

 

1. 0~20 hours: Load 30%~40%, prohibition of long-term idling and full load

2. 20~40 hours: Gradually increase load to 50%~60%, single continuous operation must not exceed 4 hours

3. 40~50 hours: Maximum power not exceeding 70% of rated power, prolonged full load and overload are prohibited

4. Prohibition of long-term idling with no load allowed: single idling should not exceed 10 minutes; prolonged idling may cause carbon buildup and dilution of engine oil

 

Ⅱ. Startup and shutdown operations

 

Startup

1. Pre-start inspection: oil level, coolant, diesel, battery voltage, and no leakage in any pipelines.

2. Low temperature environment (below 5°C): Preheat before starting; single start should not exceed 5 seconds, continuous start interval should be 15 seconds. If three failed starts, troubleshoot for faults. Do not force sparking.

3. After starting, let the engine rest for 3~5 minutes to warm up, observe oil pressure, water temperature, abnormal noises, oil and water leaks, and if parameters are normal, load gradually again.

 

Stop the engine

1. Remove all loads, idle no-load for 3~5 minutes to cool down, then turn off the engine.

2. Do not stop the engine immediately after high-temperature full-load operation, as it may cause cylinder head deformation and turbine damage.

 

Ⅲ. Key Points for Inspection During Operation

 

1. Oil pressure: normal 0.25~0.5MPa; stop immediately if too low.

2. Water temperature: 75~85°C is optimal, not exceeding 90°C. If overheated, immediately lower load and stop for inspection.

3. Listen for abnormal noises: no cylinder knocking, friction, or belt harsh noises. If abnormal noises occur, stop immediately.

4. Check exhaust: normal light gray;

Black smoke = excessive load/insufficient intake;

Blue smoke = burning oil;

White smoke = water ingress / poor low-temperature atomization.

5. Check the engine body, oil pipes, and water tank every 2 hours for leaks.

 

Ⅳ. Requirements for Choosing Fuel, Engine Oil, and Coolant

 

1. Engine oil: strictly follow the specification in the manual. Use factory-specific diesel engine oil during the new machine break-in period; do not mix oils of different brands with viscosity.

2. Diesel: Use national standard clean diesel, strictly prohibit inferior non-standard oil, and regularly clean the fuel tank for impurities.

3. Coolant: Long-lasting antifreeze; do not add tap water directly, as scale may corrode the waterways.

Ⅴ. Environment and usage precautions

 

1. Dusty construction sites: Shorten air filter inspection intervals, clean filter dust every 8 hours.

2. Humid or outdoor storage: Take rain protection measures and check battery wiring daily for oxidation.

3. Do not start or stop frequently for short periods (each operation less than 5 minutes), as this can easily accelerate cylinder liner wear.

4. Do not install high-power external equipment or force heavy loads during the break-in period.

 

VI. Additional Precautions Before the 50-Hour First Service

 

1. Record cumulative operating hours, pay attention near 45 hours, stop maintenance immediately after 50 hours, do not delay

2. Before maintenance, heat the engine and drain oil to fully discharge metal shavings generated during break-in.

3. Replace all filter elements at once during the first service; do not change only the engine oil without the filter cartridge.

4. After maintenance is completed, keep maintenance records and spare parts receipts, as this may affect the overall machine warranty

Ⅶ. Rules for Idle Storage (Unused for a Long Time but Less than 50 Hours)

 

1. Run the engine idle for 10–15 minutes once a week to warm it up, preventing oil sedimentation and internal corrosion.

2. If left unused for a full month, even if only used for 20–30 hours, it is recommended to perform the first maintenance in advance.

3. Disconnect the negative terminal of the battery to prevent power drain.

 

Supplement: Consequences of violations

 

1. During the break-in period, overloading or exceeding the time limit without performing the first maintenance can result in engine damage, piston scuffing, and cylinder wear, directly voiding the manufacturer's warranty.

 

2. Long-term idling with no load can cause oil dilution and carbon deposits blocking the fuel injectors, leading to high fuel consumption and poor performance later.
