How to Select Engine Oil for Diesel Generator Sets

Diesel Generator Set Engine Oil Selection Standards (Just Follow as Purchased)
Ⅰ. Quality Grade (API Diesel-Specific C Series)
1. Ordinary naturally aspirated, older generator sets: CF-4
2. Turbocharged, commonly used new machines, mainstream engines like Cummins/Yuchai/Weichai: CH-4, CI-4 (most recommended, most versatile)
3. National III/National IV electronic injection, with exhaust after-treatment: CJ-4 low-ash
⚠️ Absolutely do not use gasoline engine oils (SN, SL, or other S-grade oils).
Ⅱ. Viscosity Grade (SAE selected according to ambient temperature)
- Suitable for most regions nationwide in all seasons: 15W-40 (standard for installed units, used by 90% of generator sets)
- Northern winter, low-temperature areas: 10W-30 / 5W-40
- Extremely cold below -30°C: 0W-40 full synthetic
- Old machines, high temperature and heavy load in summer: 20W-50
Ⅲ. Universal Standard Configuration
- Universally recommended for all networks: CH-4 15W-40 for Weichai, Yuchai, Cummins, Shangchai, Changchai; can be used for all ordinary generator sets.
Ⅳ. Replacement Cycle
- Normal conditions: every 250 hours or one year, whichever comes first
- Dusty conditions, continuous full load: every 150-200 hours
Tell me whether your generator set is Weichai, Yuchai, or Cummins, and whether it is located in the south or the north, and I can provide a unique, precise model for you, so you won't have to worry.
